There are two birth years showing in documents,
one on his tombstone, 1877 and 1879.  There also
appear to be two "Walter Smith's"  in several documents
of the era, born within 2-3 years apart in/around 
Manchester. 

The most likely candidiate is shown in the household
of Charles Smith, with a sister Barbary Smith, who is also
Barbara Hape.  The family lore is Walter was adopted.
In the 1880 census, Walter Smith is living with and 
a nephew of Charles at the age of 1.

Parents and siblings of W.E. Smith have yet to be located.
Recent tombstone web pages show a misspelling of Erwin.
